The BIOFLOC technology(BFT) is developed by Dr.YOROM AVNIMELECH in Israel and initially implemented commercially in Belize by Belize Aquaculture. It is one of the innovative technique used in fish farming which results in great production of fishes. BIOFLOC is defined as macro aggregates of organic matters includes bacteria algae,protozoa,diatoms,fecal pellets, rotifers,remains of dead organism,micro algae and other invertebrates. (BFT) application offers benefits in improving aquaculture production that could contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals. This technology could result in higher productivity with less impact to the environment.It is a technique of enhancing water quality in aquaculture through balancing carbon and nitrogen in the system. The technology has recently gained attention as a sustainable method to control water quality with added value of producing protein rich feed.

Biofloc-based farming makes use of aggregated single cell microbial protein or heterotrophic organisms generated in culture ponds through manipulation of carbon and nitrogen ratio. Being a rich source of quality protein with essential amino acids, minerals, vitamins or fatty acids, it enhances growth performance and its natural probiotic effects help in disease resistance.

Biofloc provides high productivity, low feed-conversion ratios (FCRs) and a stable culture environment. Also, with emerging bacterial and viral problems coupled with rising costs for energy, biofloc appears to be an answer for sustainable production at lower cost.

BIOFLOC system can be used in ponds and also in tanks for fish farming.It has a vast scope in INDIA as budget for fish farming under this innovative technique is not very high so it can easily be used by small & marginal farmers.Within coming years this technique will flourish in INDIA.
