MOST VENOMOUS FISH -STONEFISH


STONEFISH are the most venomous of all fishes. They are found in the coastal regions of the Indo-Pacific.They are found throughout shallow coastal waters of the northern half of Australia. The fish usually lies motionless, often partially buried in the substrate and perfectly camouflaged among surrounding coral, rocky reef, rubble, or aquatic plants.





SOME FACTS ABOUT STONEFISH

Stonefish is the most venomous fish in the world. 

The stonefish skin is brown or grey with red,  orange or yellow patches.It can easily disguise in the rocks hence it is popularly known  as stonefish

The stonefish reaches an average length of 30 to 40 cm and up to 2kg/5lbs in weight,is the most venomous fish in the world having venomous sacs on each one of its 13 spines.


Stonefish are found throughout the Indo-Pacific area. In Australia it is most frequently found in and around the Great barrier reef.

There are 5 species of stonefish that can be found in the coastal regions of Indian and Pacific oceans.

Stonefish is a carnivores. Its diet consists of various types of fish and shrimps.

There are 13 spines located beneath its dorsal fin with deadly spikes that act like hypodermic needles and inject highly toxic venom into any creature that comes in contact with them.

The Venom of stonefish is produced in the gland located in the base of each spine. Venom will be released after application of pressure .
