PIRANHA

PIRANHA

Piranha, also known as caribe or piraya, is a ferocious, schooling, fresh-water fish that inhabits South American rivers, floodplains, lakes and reservoirs.Piranha Fish have been introduced to other places, including Northern Brazil, Hawaii, parts of the Central and North America. Piranhas range from northern Argentina to Colombia, but they are most diverse in the Amazon River, where 20 different species are found. The most infamous is the red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri), with the strongest jaws and sharpest teeth of all. There are many species of piranha fish. Piranha Fish belong to the genera ‘Pygocentrus’ and ‘Serrasalmus’. Although Piranhas are omnivorous, they are known for their sharp teeth and an aggressive appetite for meat. The total number of piranha species is not known and new species continue to be described.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PIRANHA

  1. Piranhas are normally about 15 to 35 centimetres long , A few can grow larger, with the largest living species, the red-bellied, reaching up to 50 cm (20 in)
  2. The extinct Megapiranha which lived 8–10 million years ago reached about 71 cm (28 in) long,[ and possibly even 100 cm (40 in).
  3. Piranhas range in colour from yellow to steel-grey to bluish to partly red to almost black.
  4.  All piranhas have a single row of sharp teeth in both jaws.
  5. The teeth are tightly packed and interlocking (via small cusps) and are used for rapid puncture and shearing. Individual teeth are typically broadly triangular, pointed, and blade-like (flat in profile).
  6. The lobetoothed piranha (P. denticulata), which is found primarily in the basin of the Orinoco Riverand the tributaries of the lower Amazon, and the San Francisco piranha (P. piraya), a species native to the San Francisco River in Brazil, are also dangerous to humans.
  7.  Most species of piranhas, however, never kill large animals, and piranha attacks on people are very rare.
  8.  These fishes have deep bodies, saw-edged bellies, and large, generally blunt heads with strong jaws bearing sharp, triangular teeth that meet in a scissor-like bite.

The most interesting thing about piranha is that even film industry has a good relation with this sharp teeth fish.Hollywood had already made film on piranha.
