THE WALKING CATFISH is commonly known as DESI MAGUR in India .The walking catfish is a species of freshwater air breathing catfish native to Southeast Asia. It is named for its ability to "walk" and jiggle across dry land, to find food or suitable environments.It is mainly confined to region of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, China and Philippines.
DESI MAGUR AS A FOOD
In India Desi Magur has a big commercial market due to its popularity and its nutritive value. It has high protein value.Among the catfishes, Clarias batrachus is of utmost importance owing to its taste, medicinal value and high market demand, especially in UP, Bihar, West Bengal, and Northeastern States.
DESCRIPTION OF DESI MAGUR
The body of this catfish is elongate its head is broader and dorso-ventrally depressed. Its body laterally compressed and tapering toward the tail; being a catfish it has four pairs of barbells (whiskers) and fleshy lips with papillae; upper jaw projecting forward a little. Its length is about twice of its width. Dorsal fin without spines, more than two-thirds body length. Adipose Dorsal fin is absent in Desi Magur. Anal fin without spines, about half of body length. Pectoral fins with prominent spine which is rough on its outer edge and serrated on its inner edge; Pelvic fins small; Caudal fin rounded. It has accessory respiratory organ that facilitate air-breathing. Genital papilla in males elongated and pointed. Colour either uniform reddish-brown or greyish-black. This fish is to be handled carefully due to its hidden sting or thorn-like spine of Pectoral fins.
HABITAT
It inhabits slow-moving freshwater rivers, streams, canals, flooded rice paddies, swamps, stagnant ponds, and even temporary pools which may dry up.It makes a wriggling motion with snakelike movements by means of its pectoral fins to move to other sources of water or to find food and
hence it gets the name ‘walking catfish’. It can also tolerate brackish water. It is mostly bottom-living fish. It is omnivorous and feeds on smaller fish, mollusks, invertebrates, detritus; It is a voracious eater. It easily accepts supplementary or formulated pellet feeds.
SIZE AND WEIGHT
Usually up to 25 cm and usually weighs up to 150 grams, exceptionally 350 grams.
